I mean, do you expect electric guitars like in Otherworld(FFx) or Snows theme?(FF13)
I sure as hell don't. I think it should feel care free, and be correctly implemented. As in at the right moments.

Your pathetic existence will shut down. I will make your lives end in ruin. Fear me, as you fear death. Not a threat, not a promise, but what must be finished. 7 final arcs...
Classical and symphonic. I liked the native Asian touch in X as well. I don't like the 'poppy' direction the music has taken. As for electric guitars and rock/metal, most times it feels out of place, except in the 'futuristic' styled games such as XIII. I suppose it depends on the setting on the game
That often depends on whatever I hear in the first few sceens.
Like in FFXII, You could tell from the cinimatics and opening that it would be filled with heavily Orchestrated music scores.
FFX had a bit more of a pop/rock/techno mix to it.
Some things will catch me off guard though, take Vamo Alla Flamenco from FFIX for instance.
QFT
I wouldn't expect games like XIII and VIII to have soundtracks identical to those of IX and IV. The more modern the setting, the more modern the music. It makes sense to hear more electronic and/or fast-paced music throughout the course of a futuristic game, and more classical in the high-fantasy titles.
That said, FFT still has some gorgeous music and it's not even Nobuo's. Just a thought.

I would expect Classical style, and ancient instrument style like they used in some songs in FFIX as well as futuristic and magical style instrumental etc. If the songs are lyrical than they should be like Melodies of Life and Eyes on Me and all that good stuff. I also hate the pop style that the lame composers are using now. I swear I do not like Enix they ruined Square to the extreme. Any square game above FFX lacks any form of genuine quality that the older ones possessed.

You know music in the series is weird for me. I almost say that it's great, if you wind up with no opion about it. What I mean is, that if it's doing it's job, then it's guiding you through emotionally, and just feels right in each circumstance, and if it's feel right and appropriate, then it just kind of blends in, which is good. The only time you might notice it, at least for me, is if it's jarring and doesn't match the setting. I kind of felt that way about the singing part of Tidus and Yuna making out in that pond. Just felt out of place for me.
On the whole though, I like big epic music, like the one that overlaid the opening FMV of VIII, and then quiet haunting music like running through the forests of X. Those were great tunes, and there are many more.
