That's an good question Ragna! I belive that they have some connection to Vivi's story... Somehow... But i also belive that it could be just any guy behind a hood... But's uh... that's would be just ironic in a way...
I was wondering:
Were the original Black Mages, with their "yellow" eyes, meant to be the same as Vivi from Final Fantasy IX?
When I was a kid I always assumed they had no face either, but now I believe the original Black Mages were just hiding their faces under their hoods.
And Vivi is (like a lot of FF IX elements) a tribute to the appearance of the original black mages.
I just need some certainty.

My Reaction of People That Points The Obvious
This is my Daily Day in 2FortMy TFF Family:
Nah, the original Black Mages had faces, they just kept them hidden underneath their hoods. In Final Fantasy I for the NES, when you get the class change and become a Black Wizard, they end up taking off their hoods, and they look kinda similar to a Summoner, minus the horn.
It's an interesting question, because as far as I know, when FF1 was remade onto the GBA in the Dawn of Souls port, the graphics people ended up making a different sprite for the Black Wizard, which this time had their hood still up. I was kind of disappointed when I noticed this while my playthrough of it, because it makes the Black Wizard look dull, all they did was change the color of the clothing that the Black Wizard had, I believe.
