I don't think I could answer that question for you. When did you actually play VII? At a younger age could you have seen yourself liking this game anymore than you do now?

I can tell you how I felt. I initially loved VII and everything about it. I couldn't get enough. The whole Cloud is emo thing didn't really strike me until Advent Children. While playing VII I felt that he was just lost, didn't know who he was and struggling to figure it out. But I was around ten at the time I first played it (I think), I wasn't able to pick up as much of the story as I can now. As I grew older I realized how much of a bitch Sephiroth was, as a final boss it wasn't even a challenge, you could be under leveled severely and still beat him if you had the right set of materia. Cloud's depression is a lot more noticeable as I grew older, the graphics didn't stand up to the test of time very well at all. Among all the other things anyone cares to list. Instead of being number 1 it now sits somewhere in the top 4. But for those few years it was tops, best game out there.

Several years ago (four, I think). In a way, yes, I would certainly appreciate some things more, such as graphics.

I like VII. I'm not obsessed with VII like a lot of FF Fans. VIII was my first FF (I played a demo of it on a demo disc that came with my PSX), so it'll always be my 1st fav, though I love IX, X, X-2, & XII.

XIII, while visually stunning, is nothing more than an interactive movie. I felt no love for any of the characters. Their personalities just didn't stand out to me. The music didn't particularly stand out besides maybe the Boss Battles (like when fighting Dysley) and The Sunleth Waterscape and Titan's Trials.

    Sir, I beg to differ.

Final Fantasy VII was the reason I bought a PlayStation, part of it with hard-earned work. Breath of Fire III and Mega Man X4 were another two.

That said, I don't find it a masterpiece, and I was one that was in awe with Sephy and Cloud and the story. Yet, many years later, I still have a very special attachment to Final Fantasy VI and Final Fantasy Tactics over FFVII. I can pretty much remember the entire story of FFVI by memory, and not because it was short, but because it was captivating.

People who speak about FFVII over here, at least a fraction of them (mostly Xanatos, Zargabaath, Loaf and perhaps a few more: if Nate was here, I'd vouch for him as well) know what they're speaking. It doesn't take playing the game at its peak to enjoy it or not; it takes much more than that. It'd be ridiculous to treat the true FF fan the one that played FFVII right at its prime and claims it's the best FF game ever, much like the true FF fan isn't the one that plays FFVI and claims its the best in the series (it's formidable, but I would love to see a HD re-release and some polishing to the story to bring it up to the times). There's no true FF fan; there's the FF fan, who has played, and loves, and hates, and likes and dislikes various games in the series. Just because someone doesn't like Sephy doesn't mean s/he's not a FF fan, nor because someone hates Kefka doesn't mean they're not FF fans either. Because of this, to claim that bashing on FFVII is inconceivable (in its notion of "being unable to understand why") is folly at best. Most of us have strong reasons why we don't like, or even actually hate, FFVII, and that go beyond "counter-fandom" (i.e. to oppose FFVII fanboys by favoring NES/SNES era games).

So please, before going any further and claiming we don't know the game: we do. We've played it quite well. That doesn't mean we have to like it, in the same way as you don't have to like FFIV or FFVI to be a true FF fan. So yeah, you better believe that FFVII is being slagged; FFVI is being slagged as well, and you don't see many people thinking it's inconceivable either.

To be honest, the one Final Fantasy game that disappointed me was Theatrhythym: Final Fantasy. While I enjoyed taking a trip down Nostalgia Lane, they could have used it as an opportunity to add a lot of different characters not included in Dissidia. While they did do this with Rydia, Locke, Vivi, Ashe and Snow, they could have been a bit more varied with the ideas like including new games like they did with the IOS version but I don't want to have to pay for it for an Ipod to be able to use Hope, Celes or Serah. They could have also had specific moments where you have direct 1-on-1 battles against the Villains from the game you are using for the music (E.g: Kefka for FFVI, Sephiroth for FFVII etc) rather than clumping it all together for a battle royale with a chance to face them...

As far as I can remember, VIII was the game that was severley overhyped and it didnt even come close to living up to VII. The characters were far better in VII as was the levelling up, both of weapons and materia (Junction system wasnt great imo). However, I did like VIII. Just not even half as much. IX and X were both awesome. The one that really let me down was XII. After the success of X it seemed like SE were trying, and still are, to westernise it too much. The one thing that appeals to me about FF is the JRPG originality you get that you dont with other games. XII was a complete abomination, the battle system was shoddy, the storyline didnt engage me, the lack of Summons really disappointed me (I couldnt bring myself to play it after I got past the second sand-sea so not sure if you do acquire them after) XIII isnt too bad. Ive only got as far as landing on Pulse atm but its far more enjoyable than XII. I cant see the series ever living up to, what I call, the golden era of VII, VIII, IX & X
Allow me to clarify something. I didn't play any Final Fantasy games until I saw VIII at the rental place we had near my house. I grew up in a sega household and as such, had never heard of Final Fantasy. At first, I wasn't too sure about VIII, because I was used to games that just let me beat the crap out of everything on screen. As I kept playing however, I became more and more enraptured with the story and characters and plot and everything about it. After that, I started picking up any FF games I could find. Mostly via the Playstation releases. I and II, V and VI, and so on. I found myself delighted with these games, despite their age. Then one of my friends told me about VII, which my rental store didn't carry, so when the chance to buy it presented itself, I snatched it up. Unfortunately, I had it on PC and our computer crashed, so I didn't have a chance to finish and was told I couldn't download it on the computer a second time. 2 years later, I made a new friend who let me borrow it. I was giddy as hell going in, but that soon started dieing off until I just didn't care anymore. I did not have this problem with other FF games. They often kept me delighted all the way through, with the only exception at the time being IX which I found myself not fond of, and I did buy that one the day it was put on the shelf. My point is, when the games are released doesn't matter to me. I often find myself enjoying old games that I've only recently discovered. VII was not one of these.
You'll have your reward for finding me, and don't think of running off without collecting. My shot is faster, or my names not Balthier.

I would say FFXII because I hated the battle system, so much.

Final Fantasy X-2 if I haven't posted in here already. I see where they were going with having an advanced version of the Job/Ability system originally introduced with V but the storyline was silly, the game did not captivate me. I tried to pick it up over and over, but no avail.

I have the arrogance to proclaim that I know for a fact that most people express their dislike for ff7 purely for counter-fandom. Its really annoying. Stahp.

My biggest dissapointment would have to be either FF13 or FF12. Purely for sucky characters and plot. FF12 had amazing world map and gameplay, but with shitty story and characters, you cant really do much to help that. Not even booby physics engine.

If FF7 can compare to storyline and depth of FF6, I can believe the fanboys are right. But if it can't, I say they're on the hype train.

I played ff6. Whilst I admit I enjoyed it, I dont really understand the psuedo hype surrounding it.

I didn't find it hyped up at all. You're saying FF5 or 4 (or 3,2,1) were better? My question is still, is 7 as deep as 6?

There are many people who brag about ff6 , I had never met so many until I joined this forum and started doing a bit of research. I dont like to compare games in that sense, so what I will do is tell you what I liked about each one.

FF6 - Cool characters and personalities.
    - Evil protagonist who starts out as subordinate, then overthrows his leader (I love that)
    - story flowed nicely, has a good pace.
    - Nice deal of optional quests.
    - Nice array of armor and equipment for each character
    - Vast world map
    - Dinosuars.

    FF7 - Tifa
    - Tifa

    = oTIfa

    --Tifa

    ---tifa/

But the reasons I do love ff7 are going to be different and in some cases, completely contradictory to others opinions about it. I happen to think ff7 story is very deep, especially considering the bulk of back story, characters, spin offs etc. The whole game is my definition of the word 'epic'. A lot of people would have preffered Zack to be the hero, but they dont realise that cloud has a huge part to play in the story in reguards to being the underdog, the 2nd class soldier who never made it. The boy who had his hometown burned down by the man he idolised and inspired him to be in soldier. The man who had turned into an insane monster. The man who everybody feared. The man who became... a god.

He was slaughtered all the same.
    3 times.

    for underestimating cloud.

But, he will be back... to underestimate... AGAIN!

Is FF7 is deeper, vaster and bigger than FF6 in general? More items, spells, dungeons, towns, side quests, etc?

What's the point of all this bickering? All you're doing is arguing opinions about something that can only be based on opinions. Whether FF6 or FF7 is better is completely subjective. It depends entirely upon if you prefer an epic steam punk adventure with a large, dynamic, and sympathetic cast, Final Fantasy's best villain, and a dark plot development that happens halfway through the game... or a story about an emo dude and a momma's boy.

....lolol, jk guys. They're both great games with great stories and characters. I personally prefer FF6, but I won't call you a fan boy for liking FF7 better. Like whatever the hell you want. I like turtles.

    Anyhoo...

No wait, I take that back about X-2 being the worst. Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers was the worst. In fact, any entry in the Crystal Chronicles series sucked. I was so excited back when FF was coming to the gamecube, and when I finally got to play the game, it was a disappointment in the end. None of it's successors got any better and I pretty much went cold turkey on the series.

If my expectations took what others said into consideration, FFVI would be the most disappointing. Intertrons hype = infinity. Nothing can live up to it.

Buttt FFXII. Game had Ogre Battle and FFT's Matsuda at the helm, which should have made it good. The game I got was FFXI's MMO battle system crossed with the most uninteresting, out of place protagonist in an FF ever. Probably could have gotten over the latter, but the battle system was so monotonous, and maps were so unnecessarily huge for a single player game. Stopped after I retrieved a crystal with Penelo (?) in some random field. I just couldn't get into it. The soundtrack was good though.

Rowan and Odin, please stick to the topic.

As for FF7: It disappointed me as well. But not because I didn't like it. I just expected it to be a BLAST. One of my best friends told me how much she loved the game, how great the characters are, how AWESOME the gameplay is, how great the graphics are compared to previous games, etc. etc. And then I thought: Wow, this game MUST be the best you've EVER played! ... it wasn't. It could have NEVER reached ANY of my expectation, which I just had because everyone was telling me it was SO great. Don't get me wrong, I liked the game pretty much, though I didn't like most of the characters, but it wasn't as blasting as it should've been after all I'd heard.
Besides: she, in return, expected VI to be superawesome and it hasn't been for her, just because I told her so much about it.

That's what I wanted to know: if there was a trade off between going 3d, using anims, gfx and sticking in 2d environment. I didn't want to start a fanboism flame war with Rowan. He thought I was picking on his precious which is not the case. Well I guess I got dragged in abit, yes, but my goal was to find out if theres' a tradeoff between content and going to 3d world with animations and other things.

Another question: I played FF8. Is it bigger and vaster than FF7 or vice versa.

Now for on topic: FF All the Bravest is the worst.

To be honest, it all started with Final Fantasy X for me. While I do still enjoy it every time I play it, I saw it as the turning point in the series. Maybe it's because they removed the world map or the battle system changed... I don't know. I enjoyed the story-telling and the locations you go to... but beyond that, it was just too "typical anime" for me and I thought that the characters were pretty horrible (minus Auron). Don't even get me started on FF11 and beyond...

I'll compliment the graphics though. They have that much going for them at the very least.

I have only played from FF7 through to FFX and from this I would say FFIX is my Least favourite (I don't hate it but don' t think it is as good as the previous ones and the one after it), however I have seen FFX-2, FFXII and FFXIII and from looking at this the one that looks weakest to me is FFX-2 evne though my GF loves it. I know a lot of people slagged this game down and I do intend to go through it one day (even it is just so I can say I have done it).
