The characters were far better in VII as was the levelling up, both of weapons and materia (Junction system wasnt great imo). However, I did like VIII. Just not even half as much. IX and X were both awesome. The one that really let me down was XII. After the success of X it seemed like SE were trying, and still are, to westernise it too much. The one thing that appeals to me about FF is the JRPG originality you get that you dont with other games. XII was a complete abomination, the battle system was shoddy, the storyline didnt engage me, the lack of Summons really disappointed me (I couldnt bring myself to play it after I got past the second sand-sea so not sure if you do acquire them after) XIII isnt too bad. Ive only got as far as landing on Pulse atm but its far more enjoyable than XII. I cant see the series ever living up to, what I call, the golden era of VII, VIII, IX & X
