Nude Art

Many think nude art is an eye sore, or just plain pornography. But do you really think it's just about one exposing themselves to be stared at in a vulgar way? There is more to nude art than just the nudity itself. Like the subject's expression, for instance. The theme.. the lines and how it was drawn. Those are the things that make it interesting. They can tell a story.

What are your views on nude art? Would you hang it on the wall in your house? Do you think it's no different than porn or is there more meaning to it that separates it from simplistic vulgarity?

Also, this thread isn't an excuse to post up tits and ass. Porn is not allowed on this site.

Nude art does not appear to me as "Vulger" but its not somthing I would hang on my wall at this day in age.

However back in Greek times some of the greatest arts were nude. Also the statue of Daivid is nude and thats, In my opinion, one of the greatest sculptures ever.

I think people these days are more preverted so nude art and such things like it are concidered pornagraphic. Its a dying art form.

If done tastefully nude art can be beautiful and hold deep meaning. I'm not opposed to it at, although I doubt I'd find myself hanging it on my wall.
To be honest, I have to still develop a particular artistic taste - I don't know what kind of pictures I would hang up in my own house.

I think the human form can be quite beautiful. It would have to depend on the piece, whether or not I'd hang it in a room with a lot of traffic. One of the men who plays a sort of avuncular role in my life has always loved the female form and has made several wood carvings of nude women. They're quite wonderful and focus on movement and shape more than details. I would secretly like to have my own nude form artfully carved into a piece of wood someday, if I'm honest. That'd be pretty boss.

Anyway. I suppose it depends on the intention of the nudity.

I find that the natural curves of a female figure is more pleasing than that of a male figure but of course it can also depend on the surrounding aspects for example in a calm garden a female form filled with topiary, waterfalls etc would have the required effect because of the gentle natural curves of the female figure i personally like sandstone carvings, but in a rougher section of the garden dedicated to straight lines and corners a statue of a male figure could be be more appealing because of the chiseled male features, where as an oriental garden for example i would be more likely to have more mythical staues like dragons and /or gargoyles.

But in general an answer to your question Violet no i do not find nude art vulgar or offensive especially the charcoal or heavy lead pencil drawings of women, i especially love those of voluptuous women because it shows the natural beauty of the female figure.

As an Artist I must say...Art is nothing with out meaning and purpose...There is nothing wrong with the human Body and It should be shown with out conflict. Those who complain about it simpley dont see the meaning. As for porn and such. I see nothing wrong with that. It's has purpose, and we All know what that purpose is

Nude art is beautiful, and coming to a real understanding of the human body, essential. (Same goes for muscle and skeletal studies.) I'm actually going to have my first real life drawing class on Wednesday next week, and I'm really excited about it. : ) I love the human body in all it's diversity.

Nude art is awesome. It all really depends on the artist though. The skill, quality and intentions behind the piece really make the art. It's all very subjective though... so... Uh.

For the record nude art is nothing like porn. Porn is made for pervy guys like myself, and obviously Strong Bad. Nude art as you said can tell a story, by the expressions, and how the body is placed in the drawing. Drawing a live nude model was the first art type thing I ever did in my life. Compared to everyone elses it sucked. Oh and another thing, think of the romans, and greeks. They saw the human body as an art, and sculpted based on the beauty of it. That is what it is all about..

My family is mega into art, and my Mom has done various nude sketches, done in the Baroque style of painting. Mind you, her nudes are either from the back end, or just the torso.

So that, in her mind is fine. However, we have a Salvidor Dali painting hanging in our kitchen. Its called One Second Before Awakening from a Dream Caused by the Flight of a Bee Around a Pomegranate and she HATES it. She thinks its vulgar and tactless. I've tried the whole "its art" argument because even she, as an artist, should understand right?

Hells no. She badgers me to take it down every single time she's over. There's a huge part of me that screams hypocrite when she does it... but then again, art is subjective to taste. So whatever. I think it carries on to this thread as well. Its art. Some may like it, some may think its crap. At the end of the day whatever you yourself thinks is what matters.

People mock the art form of nude models but i have to say as a nude model for the campus for 1/4 of a semester which 2 years later im going back to get an education from. that its not easy sit and or standing naked for so long in one position is not easy at all. my only requests where that the heat was turned on and that i got paid.

but i appreciated and kind of horrified at myself in nude art cause really its all based on perception from the artist. i got to see the final works and alot of them i liked. non hung in the hallway thank god for that. but i did get to buy off the one sculpture of me which is cool.

but in no way is it porn. ive seen porn.....

I'm not opposed to nude art and in some cases have admired it. I think what I prefer though are the pieces where things are hidden in such a way you mightn't notice it at first, or near nude. I have a few near nude prints up around my room and any that show any skin 'become porn' to at least a half dozen people I know, so I wouldn't likely risk a full nude artwork. Though I do notice the only nude artwork I've appreciated has been of females, so there very well may be some pervasion or whatever else involved even if not intentional.

Art is more than intent, it's the mindset of the art appreciator. Any backwater hick can jack-off to that last Salvador Dali print. Doesn't mean he's an art appreciator anymore than it means the print is art. To him it's porn. Art is a mindset, as well.

I think the female form is art in of itself, but I admit being biased(as are all males) towards a predispositioned fondness for the nude female form. To test this theory I can honestly say, I do not think of the naked male form as artistic in any way. But let me defend myself by saying that I find the nude female form artistic. My mindset towards it is not pornographic.

I'm going to agree with Sin on this one. The female form is really a thing of beauty. In its more traditionally idealized forms, it's something very artistic, with sleek lines and curves. In essence, it's supposed to be rather delicate and feminine, and overall appreciated.

The male body on the other hand, while people may find it attractive, is more of a tool and moreso made for things like hard labor. I don't really see that much of an artistic side to it, though I can appreciate the hard work that is put into achieving an "ideal" physique.

I have never seen porn but I have seen nude art. In museums and stuff. My parents have a drawing done by a friend of this girl standing with her front to a waterfall and her hair blowing in the wind. Her arms are out and it looks like she is going to dive. But you can see her butt and everything. I don't think people look at it as porn. I agree with people when they say its because people are so dirty minded that they think everything nude is porn.
