The Best Book Titles

What do you think are the best book titles you've ever seen? Not even necessarily books you've read, just something that caught your eye and made you want to read it, just because of the title.

And, if it's a book you did end up buying and reading, did the book live up to the title?

Something Wicked This Way Comes - I keep seeing this one and every time, I just want to buy it. I want to know what the something wicked is. ;-; And why it's coming this way. Seriously. It's creepy and makes me curious.

Darkness Comprehended - Another one that's driving me crazy from curiosity. A bold claim to make, that darkness even can be comprehended in the first place. The summary is just as tantalizing. It's not even really in my genre but I want to know, dammit!

Across the Nightingale Floor - What is a nightingale floor, anyways? Trying to imagine what it might mean is what holds my interest so strongly.

That's all I can think of for now, I'm sure I'll find more to add to this sooner or later.

The Edge Chronicles.

And my God, best fantasy series I've EVER READ. Loved this series so much. Just really interesting stuff. Fantasy fans will love this series. It's quite old now, so it's cheap, too.

They also say "don't judge a book by it's cover"... But I do anyway. If I think the cover is ugly, I probably won't read the book. It's a bad way to think, but... oh well.

Well, when you break it down, sometimes judging a book by the cover can be a good thing. It's a numbers game, really. A good cover means the publisher hired a good artist, meaning more money spent and less to come back in. If they're willing to invest more money in the book's appearance, then they think it will sell more. That usually means either the author is an established name, or it's a new author with a really strong story to tell. Or a lucky one, but those are rare.

Going by that, technically you can judge by the cover and get away with it.

It's still not a 100% method, but it seems to work most of the time. In my experience, anyways. I'm sure it's not the case with other genres, these are just my general fantasy observations.

On Green Dolphin Street.

It's a wonderful Cold War period drama, focussing on the lives of a British diplomatic service family, mainly the mother, Mary. It's wonderful. And the ending...God, just thinking about it now makes me sad. Such a powerful book.

I don't know what it is about the title. I've just always loved it, ever since I saw it in the charity shop. Say it. 'On Green Dolphin Street'. Maybe it's the shape, maybe it's the look and sound of the letters, I don't know. I just find so much resonance in it.

Well i saw one just the other day in our local goodwill called the horse whisperer written by nicholas evans and thought it sounded interesting and i really liked the title.Ive read some of his work before like "THE DIVIDE".

"Walking Naked" by Alyssa.. Something.

It's a clever title, really.

I was forced to read this book when I was probably too young to handle it and it was one of the most raw and intense things I'd ever read, then. Of course, now it just isn't my thing. I'd rather curl up with a good horror or futuristica, but I loved it back then.

Why that title? It kind of.. Says alot. It's both something that occurs in the book, and a metaphor for something else that occurs in the book.

One of the greatest books I've read is 'Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas' by Hunter S. Thompson, the way it's written just draws me in, not to mention my attraction to the drug culture presented.

Also, all books written by Chuck Palahniuk(author of Fight Club), he's a wonderful author with a unique view of terrorising our views on society. He is very under-rated though, his books are always compared to Fight Club as if trying to copy its success, where his work is more just that style of anti-materialism in general; not trying to copy Fight Club.

Apart from my obvious favourites such as any book by R.A. Salvatore (love the way he writes), I also love Bram Stoker's Dracula (good read about the ever iconic Dracula), a book by David Metzenthen titled 'Falling Forward' about two guys (one in particular) and the times they shared, both being very different people. It's a solid read if a bit short. Oh and Wilbur Smith's 'Shout at the Devil'. It's just one of those books with an ending I didn't expect. A few twists and all along the way.

Ah, I have others just can't think of them. >< I didn't list any fantasy based reads as I'm a little biased towards liking most, regardless of how good they actually are. ><

I find that when I try to pick out a book only because it has an interesting name or cover that it almost always turns out to suck, so I usually end up picking out books after I've read the story summary on the back or inside flap so I can actually know what it's about.

Most interesting title for a book that I have seen is a true crime book called "The Woodchipper Murders". XD
You know this one is going to be a winner.

"Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil" Is the single greatest title I've ever seen and was a very readable book, although not in my top twenty.

I usually try not to lean towards cool titles and flashy covers. However the imagination that an author pours into a title might be carried over into the work itself. So if it is a particularly interesting title I might be persuaded.
