Banners - new skool or old skool?

I'm going to provide a culmination of the ideas as they've fallen.

+ Choose a job class -- or a title, even -- for your banner.
--- (Like Kevin, who said he'd be the Calculator of 0wnage. Clever.)
+ Choose an image or five (however many, really) that you would like to appear in your banner. Be sure you let me know which image you'd prefer to be the dominant one. I'll only pick a different one if it really doesn't look right.
+ Take a look at the sample banner a couple of posts below.
+ Link (or attach) the pictures you'd like to use, and I'll get it done ASAP.

We really can do either, kinda make it a contest, draft some ideas, see what we like, that sort of thing

I personally would like to keep the "totem" character on each banner that made each person unique for it. This time however, I think im not going with Dias... so maybe we can all choose some sort of representation for ourselves... to stick on the banner, its time for an upgrade methinks though

and if we want a motto/phrase/quote to be on it, or just for SOLDIER's general purposes

I think we should go with a new banner style. Uniform, like the old SOLDIER banners, but also representative of ourselves and stuff. Pretty much like an updated version.

As for my character... thats a good one. Anyone have suggestions of who best represents me, in all of my sexyness, badassness and sheer stupidity?

I'm torn between Karsh from Chrono Cross and maybe Guile from Street Fighter. I'm leaning heavily towards Karsh though. However, if someone can suggest a better character, I'm all for it

In any case, uniform is very do-able. I can set up all 13 (or 12 or 10 or whatever) banners the exact same way, and just edit in the character picture for each person. When it comes to a character for me... I dunno... Sabin seems to be my staple character, but I'm a HUGE fan of Kain. Any suggestions?

I can start toying with different sizes and background options, attaching them here. It gives us some visuals to work with. And just because we have uniform backgrounds doesn't mean we have to have uniform background colors. Adds a touch more individuality that way, right?

Okay, here's the deal. We're all gonna have the same banner, BUT!

You go find me an image of the character you would like to represent you. Link me to it, or attach it here. Anything from sprites (I have most everything) to anime to CG is quite acceptable. It's YOUR character, and it should be your choice. However, I do have one request: your picture needs to match the class of your choice. (Keep reading.)

Psychosyd's banner will proclaim him the "King" -- he's our King Arthur in our round table. He can also choose a class. Lionheart2001 (it's changing soon) and myself will be the princes, with classes as well. The rest of you will all be classified as knights. Now, if you'd like a different title, just say so, and pick something off the list below. I'm gonna name a few job classes. If you'd like a different job class, then just say so.

Warrior
Ninja
Fighter
White Mage
Red Mage
Black Mage
Blue Mage
Summoner
Necromancer
etc... you get the idea. Job classes.

Yeah... try to follow a picture along the lines of some sort of infantry... soldier... wizard... socerous picture... you know something to just kinda give this a cool theme... were looking towards a sort of Knights of the Round ideal as you can guess... why not follow with suit, make it look cool

Greater Deamons and other undead or evil ilk are also permitted... just giving some ideas... and dont feel harnessed to be like follow generic classes either

The base of the banner is attached. Ideally, your characters will be able to blend with this. If not, I can tweak them so that they do, so you don't have to worry about any horrible clashing or anything.

Obviously, the image goes on the right.
Ideally, your image faces forward... or to the left.


I suppose we could, in theory, just use TFF to host the banners. They're small enough. Until we have a better option, that works.

Okay, so... here's my completed banner.
Mine's going to be rather simple. I like it that way. Call me overly "old skool" if you must, but simplicity is key in all of my designs.

(However, I can still be a little spiffier when mixing your banners. )

I'm thinking Prince of Lancers sounds cool. If not that, I guess Prince of Mages, to have the balance with Cesar, like he would be pysical attack, and I would be magical attack.

All the non-SOLDIER members are telling me that my sig has a red X in it. I'm assuming that it's because the attachments are hosted in SOLDIER, and therefore, they can't view it. It may just be a few cases, but my best guess is that after I post your banners up, you find yourselves a place to host them. Preferrably not some free hosting place, because they always compress graphics. Even if these banners are small.

Oh, and for the record, I'll be replacing my own attachment, because I'm jazzing it up a bit. Sabin needs more than just two friends.

When you see my updated banner, you'll understand. Also, since mine says "Prince of Warriors," your should say "Prince of Wizards" instead of Mages. Because Wizards & Warriors is a great game. I'll find some pictures of other mages and splice them into your banner. And such.

(Remember guys, once I attach, we need to actually get them hosted somewhere. Most people still can't see my banner, so... *shrug*)

Also, since TFF isn't available for the actual hosting, any of you who can't get your banners hosted, I can have them hosted within a day or two of completion. Pete, this includes you, even though you're going to host your own. *shrug* Call it a completion thing or something. >_<;;

Here's your first controversy folks..

What's with the whole "prince" thing? We were all equally cool in the last SOLDIER. Giving yourself a higher rank than other people without the say of anyone but yourself and perhaps your "inner-clique" is not a good way to start off this group. Whitney isn't here, so I have to pull double duty.. I suggest you check yourself.. ^_^

You do have a point there, Merlin. The princes do seem to make us a little bit more elite than the elite. It's a nice touch, but I dunno. If anything, I think it's deeming myself Cesar and James figureheads, since we drafted the first list last night, namely since we were the first to be given access.

Then again, I guess the prince idea comes from the King Arthur idea.

Oh well, I'm guessing we should do the democratic thing and have a vote, even though I reall like Cesar's banners.

I can take "Prince" out. It's not that big of a deal. But for me, it'd be redoing my banner, because it focuses heavily on that whole "minions" thing.

...one thing though. Merlin, are you gonna be in or out? Because you sure are taking charge here.

The only reason we didn't "draft" ideas is because I showed them the sample banner, and they liked it. I'm just trying to get the ball rolling. I know Cain's gonna come in here and do entirely new banners for everyone anyway, because his banners kicked ass. And that's how Cain is. *shrug* Gimme a break, eh?

Oh, and Skai, here's your banner. I didn't do it quite the way you wanted. I did the face on top and the sword in the back, but it just didn't feel right. So... I swapped them. I really hope you don't mind.

I've gotten all four so far hosted, just because.

For anyone who hasn't noticed, I figure that there's no reason why Pete and I are the only ones who should have "special" titles. Of course, Merlin's gentle shove in the right direction worked... it was a collaborative idea, but I suppose it's best to let anyone choose what they want. I fixed up that first post sometime yesterday though, so yeah.

Anywho... I know I keep rambling, and it probably seems like it's only to cover my own ass... and maybe it is. Does it make any difference? Skai, Rya -- if you'd like to be anything more special than just a Mithstyk and a Dragoon, let me know. I've got no problem changing those around. It'll take about two seconds each, anyhow.

Skai, I think the banner looks just as good with the head in as it does out, so... whichever you prefer is no problem. Here's the updated title with no head.


Also, since I know Tiff and Alisha don't like my style of banner.. I suppose it doesn't hurt for us to have differing banners. And if we see someone trying to be cool with a SOLDIER banner who isn't in SOLDIER, we can always just verbally trash them in public or something. Or Merlin can use his amazing admin-type powers to forcefully remove the banner. Or both.

Anywho... Skai, I'll get the updated version hosted as soon as I can.

I like the various designs... we should try for a theme of some sort... but maybe not all the same banners... personally I want mine a bit bigger and flashier... so that its a beacon of shining light and elieteness going "Hello, Im in SOLDIER and because of that fact, I am better than you"

Sorry for bumping up the thread, but I was just noticing I have access now. And man it's so great to see SOLDIER up and running, and great to see some fine banners being made (props to Lococolt). Anyway I can help is great.

And Syd, you might want to know, just as a humble suggestion, the character in your card was little more than a palette swap of a character named Kaede, if you'd like I can make some of the same applications to actual Kaede sprites.

Hey, no worries. It seems as though we've tossed the idea of any sort of unity, be it size or color or anything like that, right out the window. So, feel free to go be brilliant and SOLDIER yourself up. Just stray away from the "I'm an elitist jackass" idea. We've got a couple other threads about that, such as the slogan and purpose threads.
