The screaming and the hissing and the shouting!!

Person: "What sort of music do you like?"

Me: " Oh you know Metallica, Trivium, Offspring..."

Person: rudely interrupting "Oh so you like all that screaming heavy metal crap" person turns up nose and sneers at me.

Okay i don't know about anyone else but i grow tired of people making false assumptions of me when i say i like metal and heavy metal. They immediately think of screaming, shouting, hissing men into their microphones for me this is not the case and i always have to promptly invisage in their stupid little naive heads that that is not the case with all heavy metal bands that bands in particular like Offspring, Metallica and even bands like Tool and Trivium aren't all about the screaming and shouting and you can actually hear the lyrics understand the words and even understand the meanings and stories behind the words.
It really peeves me especially when my mother in law and/or my wife tell their friends and cohort that i like metal and say it in a disdaining way that demotes not only my beliefes but the bands i listen to as well especially after i tire of telling them and demonstrating that this is not the case of all the metal bands i listen to yet they continue to do so.

And in any case i find bands such as Slipknot etc that do doe this revolting my ear folicles to the state at which it affects my inner ear that begins to dismember itself. I listen to heavy metal for the intense percussion and the deep and low bass and melody of the music itself.

So i thought i would just put this awarness out there, goodnight.

Screw 'em. Who cares what they think.

I get a sort of similar reaction when I tell people that I listen to metal. I guess they don't think that I look like I would be into that sort of music. I like Black Sabbath, Guns-n-Roses, Aerosmith, Rob Zombie, and many others that I can't seem to think of at the moment.

I wish I could offer you some great advice to tell the people who seem to have a problem with your particular taste in music, but all I can think of right now to say is "Screw off, and I don't care what you think of me". You won't change thier opinion, but at least they'll shut thier yappers.

Anyway, it seems like thier lives are so boring that they have to preach to you about what you like and how they think it's wrong that you like it. I feel sad for them.

I guess it is all a matter of taste, although some people can't accept the fact that people like specific genres. For me, I love the Offspring, Senses Fail, Korn, and System of a Down because they have meanings to their songs, but I can't stand Black Sabbath and Slipknot because:

    1. Their material is too dark for my tastes

    2. I can't hear what they're trying to say amidst their nonstop screeching of the guitar. It sounds like their violently ripping out their guitar strings.

I too listen for a nice melody and beat, not so much for the screeching, but I can see how people can like that. See? I put down my opinion in a respectful, honest way, unlike others who don't even present theirs in a logical way. Keep listening to what you love, don't let anybody tell you different.

What Sabbath songs were you listening too?!?

    Thats crazy talk, shiiiiit

I am proud to say that I don't have that problem anymore. x3 That's because I don't tell people which music I like to listen to. They mostly don't ask. And then they don't just ask what I like but what bands I listen to. And, smart as I am, I always give the names of the most unfamous bands. Means: Nobody'll know them, unless they listen to Metal, too. Works quite fine.

But a few days ago someone at work ask me: "Don't you think they're playing this song on the radio too often?"
My answer: "Dunno, I don't listen to the radio at home."
Her reply: "So what do you listen to?"
    Me: "Metal."
    She: "Oh."
    XD
Then the person seems to think: "OMFG I'd never have thought that she listened to Metal, she seemed to be such a nice, polite girl." And then it's over. They don't behave like idiots, they just accept it.
I guess the environment I'm in is a bit too mature to be so intolerant. But there are quite many stupid people out there... and I won't talk to them about music xP

Usually I like to understand lyrics, but if you listen to a song enough you understand them an matter what. The reason most metal vocalists scream and roar is to convey the anger in the song, which works very well.
I thought what I'd do was, I'd pretend I was one of those deaf-mutes...or should I?

Most people are idiots and abusive cockmonglers when it comes to music, Metal is not for everybody but a lot of the people who rag on it have no idea and act like humongous douchebags. If you don't like Metal then that's find just don't go saying something like "hurf durf dats just screaming" or some retarded garbage showing you have no bloody clue what you're talking about. I hate rap music but I don't act like a **** about it so you can at least be the same and stop assuming bullshit.

I one hundred percent agree with this. Metal isn't generally my breed of music anyway, but I strongly dislike people making backhanded assumptions about it purely in order to try and morally place themselves above the listener. It's disgusting, honestly.

    Mind ****.

I like when screaming is used 'tastefully'. I actually find it funny when it's all a vocalist does, or near enough to it.

My friend is the vocalist in a band, and he 'screams' sparingly. I mean, 95% of the time he is singing, but then will break into a scream to get across an emotion he wishes to convey. He says he has respect for people who are able to scream more than that, as he says it is easily the hardest way to sing, and requires a lot of talent to ensure it is done well.

Some bands with a screaming vocalist/s disappoint me. I think that Trivium's album Ascendancy has some amazing drumming, and the lead vocalist (I think they have a screaming vocalist, and a lead vocalist, but correct me if I'm wrong) has a really good voice. Then they start screaming, and I die a little inside. But I don't think they're terrible.

I'm just far more inclined to other types of music. Like the Pixies: YouTube - The Pixies : Caribou (1988)

Heh, that song actually uses tasteful screaming.

EDIT: good example of what I'm talking about in regards to Trivium: http://video.google.com/videoplay?do...7782565196002#

Anyone who doesn't know who The Melvins are deserves to be punched in the dick. Honestly.

I like some metal music. I like screaming vocals if done well. If somebody else doesn't like that sort of thing, well that's fantastic for them.

Re: The screaming and the hissing and the shouting!!

As some may know. I am a huge fan of pretty much every genre of music. But one of my more deeper sides of music lays to the Hardcore/Deathmetal/Deathcore stylings.

For people who say that every band sounds the same, firstly I find them ignorant, when you listen to every fooking RmB artist atm and they all have that computer generated voice sound that Chris Brown? Started.

And as for the scream and growls not being talent. I would like to see anyone scream like this for a minute, let alone a whole song or a whole concert, without your voice tearing apart.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O2q4CsM81Rg

Now Sabbath is doom metal yes. But Gunners, And Aerosmith are not metal. They're Glam Rock. Motley Crue is Glam metal because it has more heavy riffs compared to the Rock and Roll influences of Aerosmith and gunners. (My Fave band is Aerosmith, Steven Tyler invented music)

I hate people jumping to assumptions about metal, When people put a band like Parkway Drive, and say it is just like Slipknot(A disgusting excuse for music, but anyway thats a different story) it makes me so firey I feel like I have fanta pants and I get called bluey. Luckly, I do not.

EDIT: How the **** do you not know the melvins?

I am actually a pretty big slipknot fan. I wouldn't say that they are my favorite, but I enjoy their music. I live in the middle of BFE so everyone around is into bluegrass, and country... f*cking rednecks.. I would get judged in high school for being a heavy metal fan. I loved the f*cking screaming and shit. Five Finger Death Punch. Behemoth, Napalm Death. All of em f*cking rule.

Re: The screaming and the hissing and the shouting!!

Sorry to be bursting thy Bubble. But the Offspring are technically not Metal.
They're Pop/Punk. Which is a step and a leap away from any form of metal.

And as for HIM, again Technically not metal. They're more of a Alt Rock band with some melodic rock styling.

If this thread is about people assuming every band not bloody FoB and Panic! being metal, then we should be precise about what actually is metal, no?

Don't be sorry because you didn't burst any bubble and I don't think you will be any time soon, I merely stated that I got my wife listening to some of my music, I quite clearly know bands like Offspring are not metal that is quite obvious even to some of the most naive of people that was just a side note to the main body of my post which commended Pete's statement.

    Sorry Spiral maybe next time.

    I forgot to add others.

Other then Sublime which is always a great band to listen to. I love the Gorillaz, even though I found out about them after their 2nd album I instantly fell for their music the first time I heard them. With their new album coming out in a month (they sound totally different though) I am excited.

Re: The screaming and the hissing and the shouting!!

Well...I seem to have a much bigger problem.

What happens when people get dumbfounded of the kind of music you listen because they don't know an ardent jack about it?

I tend to go more for power metal and thrash metal, though I can also go a bit on symphonic metal and even folk metal. I also like my Latin rock, given that I'm from a Spanish-speaking place, but I tend to find that most Latin rock isn't so surprising aside from a few legendary bands and when I like to just chill out.

However...when you hear someone claim that he or she likes rock because "I like to listen to Maná" (mostly Mexican alternative) and...well, not much else, I just feel like headbanging...on a wall, a pretty solid concrete wall. It gets worse when you hear such lovely words as "I'm eclectic on my choice of music" (news flash: I don't, and I couldn't possibly care if I'm not eclectic; I like my VG music and metal and random bits of other music, but I don't claim I'm eclectic on my tastes!), since it sounds like trying to get well with everybody. At least hearing the "oh, so you like the hissing and screaming and shouting music-y!" sounds less...disturbing than that.

So I'm pretty uncommon on tastes, and not eclectic or purist or even listening to the right kind of music. I get far more guilty pleasures than allowed to a human being (so yeah, I listen to Metallica, a bit of Limp Bizkit, a bit of Slipknot, a bit of Linkin Park and the occasional Evanescence. Your point?) and some odd bands that really aren't as popular (Equilibrium? OOMPH!? Turmion Katilot?) and bands that are legendary but on Latin areas (such as Los Fabulosos Cadillacs), even if it's just for a song. Whether that disqualifies me or solidifies me as a rocker or geek gets me to care not; I listen to what I want, when I want it. But darn, at least I try not to claim I'm of a label I'm not (or at least explain why I think I am even when others may say I'm not, to counter the purist claims), or claim I listen to "various types of music", with all those kinds of music being different variants of a same genre. Not to offend those that really do (I reckon there's people that are truly eclectic in tastes, and enjoy just as much a bit of rock as they enjoy salsa, pop, country, band music, all classical genres and even a bit of the ill-conceived "World Music" compilations which are a catch-all for the real names of the genres), but it's a critique on those few (locals) that claim to listen to all kinds of music but really love listening to one. Or that think that are "rockers" just because they love one song from one album from one band from one itty-bitty corner of the world, just because it sounds hilariously alike to their preferred genre (oh, and because it makes them seem "cool")

    The Final Boss Theorem:
The size of the ultimate form of the final boss is inversely proportional to it's chances of actually beating your party. If you agree with this, please copy and paste this valuable piece of info on your sig. AND, if you're evil and villainous...never settle for a big form when a smaller form is more kickass...
