Covers

What are your favorite covers? Here are 25 of mine; enough to fit on a blank CD (and also the originals alongside them):

1. Here Is The News:
BS2
ELO

2. I think I Love You:
Less Than Jake
The Partridge Family

3. Stop That Pigeon
Reverend Horton Heat
(So...wow. I cannot find an actual original version of this song that hasn't been fucked with in some way. The internet is really annoying sometimes. It was originally in a **** Dastardly cartoon.)

4. Don't Stop Me Now
The Vandals
Queen

5. Mega Man 2
Year 200X
Capcom

6. Boxcar
The Ataris Jawbreaker

7. Dress You Up
Zolof The Rock And Roll Destroyer
Madonna

...I posted 49 videos here, and then I deleted them all because I realized how long it took to load the page, and started linking to them. Then I decided it was too much work to keep on linking to them. **** it, I'll come back later and do it. Anyhoo...

Re: Covers

I have many, many, favourite covers. In some cases, I prefer them to the originals.

The thing about covers, though, is that anyone can play the same notes, sing the same lyrics, and keep the same rhythm. A good cover is one that is re-interpreted by the band performing it. A cover I really like is one that is re-interpreted, and the re-interpretation is in a style I like.

...Which is why I really like Lady Gaga covers.

One that really comes to mind is Dinosaur Jr.'s cover of The Cure's Just Like Heaven. I'll let Wikpedia take over my critical analysis (I wish I could do this for everything):

Robert Smith's personal favourite is the cover recorded by American alternative rock band Dinosaur Jr., which was released as a single in the UK in 1989 (and 1990 in the US). Dinosaur Jr.'s version has a faster tempo and showcases the band's loud and distortion-heavy sound. The band's frontman J Mascis explained, "We recorded it for a compilation album, but when we finished it we liked it so much we didn't want to give it to them." Smith said, "J. Mascis sent me a cassette, and it was so passionate. It was fantastic. I've never had such a visceral reaction to a cover version before or since", and even said the cover has "influenced how we play it live".
Now that's a cover.

This live version is pretty cool too: even more distortion.

Re: Covers

I have a few cover songs I like. I don't necessarily like them more than the original, mind you, but I enjoy them. ^^

No particular order:

Boys of Summer by the Ataris

I really enjoy the original version by Don Henley, but the cover has a nice punk rock edge to it.

I Melt With You by Bowling for Soup

Some people don't care for the goofiness of Bowling for Soup's music, but I dig them at times. Their version seems more fun than the original, and there's kazoos~

There She Goes - Sixpence None the Richer

I pretty much like both the cover and the original version about the same. The cover has sweeter sounding vocals, but I like the instrumentation of the original.

True Colors - Phil Collins

It's got a bit more of a pop beat to it, whereas the original was more sweet sounding, but I like Phil Collins' singing a little more than Cyndi Laupers.

Hallelujah - Rufus Wainwright

Fell in love with this song in that one scene in Shrek. I wasn't aware of the original until I went to look for Wainwright's version on iTunes, but wasn't there. So I settled for that one. It's gospel bluesy-sounding, and honestly, I'm not too familiar with much in that genre, but it's nice. ^^

Mad World - Gary Jules

A lot more melancholy sounding when compared to Tears For Fears, but I think it's more effective that way.

Re: Covers

I will agree, my favourite cover ever is Gary Jules' 'Mad World. I think the lyrics fit his style more. I never thought Tears For Fear's version of the song fit the lyrics (even though they wrote it ).

Johnny Cash's version of Hurt is a lot better than Nine Inch Nails' original. Don't get me wrong, NIN is one of my favourites, I just feel that Cash's version was very heartfelt and had more soul to it than NIN's version.

Apart from that though, I can't say that there are any others that stand out to me. There are some good covers, but those two are the one's that I think are truly great.

Re: Covers

Nirvana did a hell of a good cover of Lake of Fire by the Meat Puppets at their MTV Unplugged show in 1993. They also covered Plateau and Oh Me by the Meat Puppets at the same show, but those two, while still good, are less notable.

Lake of Fire - Nirvana

Lake Of Fire - Meat Puppets

Motorhead did an excellent version of Richard Berry's Louis Louis from their 1978 B-Side Tear Ya Down, and later on re-issues of the band's second album, Overkill. The Kingsmen can suck it. Their version is good, but Lemmy is god.

Motörhead - Louie Louie - 1978

Richard Berry - Louie Louie - 1957

The Kingsmen - Louie Louie - 1963

Even got a rePETEr (<---- like that ay? AYYYYY?) on the back burner.

Block: I do like the rePETEr except it kinda makes it sound like you're going to pork Pete. No homo.

Re: Covers

People I knew at the time never liked these guys, but one of the best cover bands I've seen was Stay Tuned. I like them in part because I used to watch WKRP.

Stay Tuned | TV themes like you've never heard them before

I've also been in places where you send a request to the piano player, and he sings whatever. One of the best was a request for NIN's Closer. Ever heard that by a piano lounge singer?

The first two series, for those of you who don't read or know, were 7 volumes total and all for PS2. There was also an 8th; it was called .hack//Fragment Offline.
