I haven't heard much of those but from what I have:

Belenos - Spicilege ~ All their albums are great
Otyg - Älvefärd ~ Great album
Equilibrium - Turis Fratyr ~ Again, Great stuff
Agalloch - The Mantle ~ Still trying

I need to get the rest of Slough Feg's albums.

As essential albums...

Doom Metal
Pentagram - Any of the Death Row era albums. This is the closest you come to the blue print of doom metal and there really isn't as much as one weak track on these 3 albums.
Trouble - Psalm 9
Candlemass - Epicus Doomicus Metallicus
Pagan Altar - Volume 1
Doomsword - Resound The Horn (okay, it's Viking metal made by Italians, but this is ****ing awesome hehe)

The more extreme slow stuff:

Grief - Dismal
Winter - Into Darkness
Dream Death - Journey Into Mystery
Worship - Last CD/Vinyl/Tape Before Doomsday

Thrash metal
Mekong Delta - Mekong Delta
Sabbat - Dreamweavers
Coroner - Punishment For Decadence
Sodom - Obsessed By Cruelty
Kreator - Pleasure To Kill
Slayer - Reign In Blood
Usurper - Skeletal Season

Heavy/power metal

Mercyful Fate - Melissa
The Lord Weird Slough Feg - Twilight Of The Idols
Angel Witch - Angel Witch
Judas Priest - Sad Wings Of Destiny
King Diamond - Fatal Portrait
Black Sabbath - Heaven and Hell

120% ESSENTIAL!
First 5 Black Sabbath albums.

I'm biased towards II Crush the Insects because it was my first album by them and got me really into them.

Oh ****in' hell. Sludge! I love sludge so much, be it the old school first wave with the likes of Iron Monkey and Crowbar or the new second wave with Isis and Pelican I ****in' can't get enough of it lately.

Favorite sludge band, The Ocean. ****ing MASSIVE band.
<img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v52/CrushedHopeMWW/bece6c58.gif"

Personally I don't really see why people dump bands like Isis into the sludge category. They really don't have much in common with bands like EyeHateGod or Grief apart from the the vocal style.

Post-hardcore/metal is a much better description for all the Neurosis worshippers in my opinion. I quite like Neurosis, and to a certain extent also Isis, but those bands all sound terribly alike to me.

Sludge however is awesome. EyeHateGod, Grief, and Crowbar are all ace when it comes to some good old-fashioned torture of the ears hehe.

Really it has to be looked at in the "waves" way for it to work. 1st wave black metal sounds nothing like second wave BM, and the most recent DM sounds nothing like early DM ...

Noothgrush is my favorite in terms of the old school sound. But man, The Ocean is probably my favorite sludge band overall.

I suppose it makes sense if you look at it like that. But there are newer bands who sound much more like a natural development from the earlier sludge bands than Isis and co (who sound nothing like them IMO)
Bands like Deadbird, Buried At Sea, Among The Missing and Graves At Sea is what I'd call second wave sludge.

Neurosis fathered a new genre IMO.

Yeah, I can't begin to think of a term for it though ... no way I'll ****in' call it post-metal.

I have just heard this new Russian Doom Metal band Non Immemor Mei which I found quite interesting, quite unique imo.

Also if you want to hear some obscure roots of BM look for the band Mortuary Drape, Secret Sudaria is excellent First wave BM.

Speaking of "waves", do you consider there to be a third-forth wave of BM? I think there is a third wave, but I dislike the term "Post Black or Post Death Metal"

12. #132
Post-black has nothing to do with the third wave of BM, it refers to bands such as Arcturus and Solefald.

HAY THAR GUYS.

Well, seeing as a couple of you are posting "essential metal albums", I might as well throw my 2 cents in. These might not be up to snuff comparatively to y'all's, but meh, I like 'em. Most of them are Death Metal or Blackened Death, seeing as they are my sub-genres of choice.

Necrophagist - Onset of Putrefaction
This is the CD that got me into Tech Death. What impresses me even more over the sheer brutal technical nature of the album is that Muhammed Suicmez pretty much did everything on the entire album himself (with the addition of computer programmed drums, of course). A few recommended tracks are "Foul Body Autopsy", "Extreme Unction", "Advanced Corpse Tumor", and "Fermented Offal Discharge"

Cryptopsy - And Then You'll Beg
As Heimdall pointed out a while back, I'm probably the only person alive who prefers Mike DiSalvo to Lord Worm, and because I do, this album holds a special place in their library. I particularly like "Back to the Worms" off this album.

Gorod - Leading Vision
While I thoroughly enjoyed Neurotripsticks, this album overall feels a lot more put together. Not many bands can pull off such brilliant metal-to-jazz feels quite like Gorod, and they really show it on this album. Some good tracks are "Thirst For Power", "Eternal Messiah", and "Blackout".

Death - Individual Thought Patterns
Most people I know prefer their older stuff from the "Scream Bloody Gore" era, but I like this era far better. While Chuck Shuldiner's voice isn't really 100% for this kind of metal, his guitar work more than makes up for it. I absolutely adore "Trapped in a Corner" off this CD. The solo makes me choke up from its awesomeness.

Cynic - Focus
I absolutely love experimental metal, and Cynic embodied it. "Uroboric Forms" is so weird and yet so awe inspiring at the same time. The jazz bit in the middle of the song is so relaxing, then it hits you full force afterwards. Love it.

I'll come up with more later.

Has anyone in this family ever even seen a chicken?

There's a post black genre now? Raw Black, Symphonic Black, Melodic Black, Advente Guarde Black, and now Post Black? TOO MANY GENRES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! *Goes apeshit and bashes head into wall.*

Seriously, someone needs to post every single subsubsubsubgenre. There's already what? 20 death metal subgenres? Blackened death, tech death, death thrash, deathcore, death doom, deathgrind, gore, splatter, etc.

Blackened Death, Death/Thrash, and Brutal Death, and Deathgrind are the only real "subgenres" of death metal.

Death/Doom is more of a doom subgenre, and gore/splatter are lyrical themes. Deathcore is a form of metalcore.

Doom has the most subsubgenres of all the metal subgenres. Traditional Doom, Death/Doom, Funeral Doom, Stoner Doom, Sludge, Drone Doom, and more recently Black/Doom. Gothic doom perhaps could be considered a subgenre of doom but I really don't think it warrants its own subgenre as it mostly consists of death/doom with gothic doom elements.

Well I do not get too concerned about genres but I do hate people who call CoF and CoB Black Metal and the like. I sort my music into the Main Genre but do not specifically call them as such as some bands do not quite fit under that genre perfectly ie I have a folder for Neo-Folk and Viking/Power/Pagan Metal so I can put Worngraven, Ensiferum and Demons & Wizards into the same folder.

Also I might start to grab a bunch of new stuff soon, suggestions are welcome.

I dont have suggestions as alot of them right now... would probably be shunned or already obtained.

Why is this thread dying? Im ****ed off about that, mind, I've been away and I havnt seen whats been going on much, I'll catch up in a moment.

As for CoF being black metal... NOOOOOOO! ¬_¬

My little sister is blasting out her screamo right now... I remember the days when the whiney voices of most of it didnt get on my nerves. Though for some reason I still thing of 36 crazyfists as screamo... I dont know why, thoughts on that?

I can listen to crazyfists though, happily, am I a freak? Am I tainted? Oh ****, get it off me, GET IT OFF ME!

Ahhh thank you for reviving this before it died, I have been listening to quite a lot of new stuff;

The Deviant (Ravenous Deathworship) - At first it sounds like an Immortal clone (SOTND Era) which it kind of is except it is slightly more thrashier, if you like SOTND then it is worth checking out.

Elite (Bitfrost and Kampen) - Again I thought a clone of the band Taake however I think they are better, not quite as melodic and is more raw, well worth the listen.

Gjenferdsel (I) - Also a Taake sounding band, kind of generic sounding, ok I guess but nothing spectacular.

Diagnose: Lebensgefahr - FVKKING AMAZING!!! I have been meaning to get this for quite a while now and I finally stumbled upon a copy and just as I thought it was quite spectacular. One of the best Dark Ambient projects I have ever heard, certainly one of the best releases of 2006 for me.

November's Doom (The Novella Reservoir) - Only had 1 listen so far but I was expecting more Doom as the only other 2 songs I heard where Doom, it is more Deathish it seems. Decent so far though I probably need a few more listens to get a better opinion.

Ensiferum (Victory Songs) - Everybody seems to like it though I honestly prefer Jari's vocals and maintain that Iron was the best release. However thats not saying it's bad, though I may need to give it a better listen.

Lost Eden (Cycle Repeats) - I got this to hear how the Japanese do at Death Metal and it turned out to be Metalcore crap, if you like real metal you will stay away from this as much as possible.

19. #139
Winter, have you ever listened to Primordial? If not then you should check them out, I think you'd like them Especially Spirt The Earth Aflame.

Primordial arnt all that secret...

I listen to them now and again, I dont really rate them though, but my favorite song is the heretics age... Dont ask why as most of the time I like music simply on first impression and that was back in like what... 2002?

Whats going on with the BoD club... Its sinking in the list, which is ****ed up, raise it from the depths members, I mean shit.

Who the hell are CHOJIN? I think they sound okay actually...
Maybe they are more local.

Anyon eelse heard of Chojin?

Listening to- Chimaira- Save ourselves.
Woah.

Later, ****ers.

Primordial is ****ing awesome. I bought "A Journey's End" on a recommendation from a friend, and I recently bought "The Gathering Wilderness" as well. Both absolutely great albums.

As for Chimaira and 36 Crazyfists, I really can't stomach either. Or the rest of the Roadrunner snoozefest for that matter. The last time Roadrunner released anything worth spending your money on, was Beyond the Crimson Horizon by Solitude Aeturnus. They can keep Nickelback, Black Label Society (perhaps the worst metal band ever) and Trivium to themselves.

I have heard of Thy Primordial but I am guessing another band?

36 Crazyfist was ok though I did not listen to them enough (though I got given Bitterness the Star) to give them a proper opinion. I guess my secret liking would be Hatebreed though I haven't listened to them in a while. Trivium has to be one of the worst ever, New Metallica huh? Yeah new Saint Anger period.

Having listened to them more this week, due to either being forced to by my retard monkey skeleton of a sister or just choosing to through it being in my head, I have discovered that I actually quite like them, "Felt through a Phoneline" has really good lyrics and I enjoy listening to it very ****in much, same with "I'll go untill my heart stops".

On a heavier note... No i wasnt talking about Thy Primordial Winter, just Primoridial on its own.

I know man, I was just stating that he probably had, cos they are quite big compared to alot of the music I've heard he listens to, good band though, worth mention so well done.

Anyone here from the UK? I just wondered if anyone was going to download and how ****ed off you are My Chemical Romance being a headliner, as it turns out, if I see anybody celebrating this whilst im there I will cave their heads in. Tards ¬_¬.

I hate that band.

Anybody going Download then?

Never heard of any of that, but If this thread sies again I shall unleash fury upon the girls club... Just because the leader lives in my house.

\m/ Britains download fest is on its way, unfortunate about the MCR being headliners, but at least we can aim empty cans and bullets in their direction eh?

Bring back the metallica and other METAL headliners, I dont care who as im to drunk/drugged to give two ****s, but c'mon.

Rammstein, wouldnt mind seeing them again.

Hey, welcome back aboard.

If I'm going to any festivals this year, it'll probably be Wacken. Download is a bit of a hassle to get to compared to the festivals on the mainland, and in all honesty, I'm not really that interested in seeing My Chemical Romance or Linkin Park. Slayer is a fantastic live band, but I've seen them lots of times and they are pretty much touring constantly so it's not really worth travelling that far for.

Keep It True is another good one I'd really like to attend.

Thanks Ken!

Really want to go to Wacken this year, too.

Hellfest is tempting, though only so I can say I've seen Emperor twice in one lifetime (And it'll be even better if I go and the guys I went to see Emperor in London with didn't. Bragging rights! "I've seen Emperor ONE TIME MORE than you have!" "You prick ")

Blastonbury looks like good fun, but I'd really only be going for Anal **** and Impaled Northern Moonforest! Comedy will be in abundance.

Download looks about as appealing as a hole in the head. TOO MUCH MONEY!

Blackthorne- No matter how awful the band is, throwing stuff at them will always be an act of cowardice. Same as heckling. There is something inherently sissy about hurling projectiles or verbal abuse at people when they have no idea where you are, and when you fully intend on staying hidden so they cant beat your head in. If you dont like the band, dont watch them.

Only band it should be ok to throw stuff at- Iron Maiden.
Awesome band, but as shown by Sharon Osbourne at that Ozzfest fiasco (to sum it up, she paid a load of jackasses to throw eggs at Iron Maiden, because she's annoyed that people were coming for Maiden and not Ozzy, and that Bruce can still talk coherently), the more pissed off Maiden get, the better they play!
(Or if Blaze is fronting them. That man is [unintentionally] frigging HILLARIOUS when he's mad!)

Folk/black/whatever metal hybrid.

But you haven't heard of Sunn O))) or Boris?
Sunn O))) - Drone racket
Boris- Depends what album. They change style each bloody time.

But the colab is fantastic. You've got your weird ambient tracks, your stupidly heavily tracks, and tracks that sound like if Múm or Explosions In The Sky turned evil.
If you go onto this site and click Media, you should get a little popup box that lets you listen to the whole album! (sans bonus tracks)

More reason for me to move to Europe, we never get much decent stuff come here, I missed out on Opeth and the next band coming I believe is slipknot...

I think Cannibal Corpse is coming too though I am not big on them but I may I dunno.
