Conversation Between Victoria and Sasquatch

  1. I remember one of my college professors joking that you could say that you could pick a guilty criminal just like that. *snaps fingers*

    And apparently they won't pick you, lol. Not sure if that works or not, though.
  2. Jury Duty is kind of mandatory. But they notify more people than they need, so not all of them are chosen for the actual duty. People joke about just telling them that you hate a certain color of people or whatever, and they won't pick you ... but some people actually do that. Usually, they want the most impartial people, so, say, if it's a case against a sex offender, and you have been sexually abused or assaulted, they'll stay away from letting you help decide the defendant's guilt or innocent.

    I think people are paid for it, but it's a very little amount, and they obviously have to take off work or whatever. They try to balance between paying enough that people WANT to do jury duty, and not paying anything so people do anything to avoid it.
  3. Wow, seriously? I heard that jury duty was mandatory, and you get fined or something if you don't do it. o_O;

    At least over here in Cali, anyway.

    (Sorry for the delayed response. >_>; I accidentally posted it in my own profile and didn't notice until now. *cough*)
  4. I think it's supposed to be registering to vote that also makes you elegible for jury duty. It's pretty rare, though. I haven't had to do it yet, and I remember only once or twice that my dad ever got summoned, but he didn't have to do it.
  5. Hmm...

    I forget which one it is, but..

    Is it registering to vote, or getting your license that gets you forced into Jury Duty? >_>;
  6. You can, but your party registration decides what Primaries you get to vote in. If I'm a registered Republican, some places won't let me vote in the Democratic Primaries, and if I'm a registered Democrat, some places won't let me vote in the Republican Primaries. Some places, but not all.

    There was even a big ruckus in Georgia a few years ago, when people kept electing Cynthia McKinney back into Congress. So once, thousands of Republican voters went to the Democratic Primaries and voted for McKinney's opponent, who won, but couldn't face up to the Republican against her. Can't do that in all states, though.

    Plus, your party registration also dictates what sort of political crap you get in the mail all the time.
  7. ...Ah, that explains it. Although, can't you vote for whoever you want regardless of what party you're in anyway? o_Oa
  8. Party change.
  9. Hmm.. I was always under the impression that you only had to register to vote once. o_O;
    So if you did it before, why do you have to do it again?
