Story-wise you were pretty much half-way. FFXII has a pretty short story and I find that unfortunate. I would say 6 - 7 more plot areas and the game is over after the Leviathan that is. Just a hop skip and a jump. Though there is a lot to do in between cutscenes which can make the game's story seem sparse.
Yeah I'm gonna give it another try, apparently i packed it in right before the game takes flight storywise. Too much of the game was boring for me, i didnt like the trend of running around mazes which all the enviroments seemed to all take all the time. Its been a long time since ive played it, i know there was more which pissed me off, but i cant seem to remember All FF games prior sucked me into the story during the early parts of the games, i guess i just grew impatient the game wasn't doing that, or what ive now been told, happens shortly after the place i got too, derp!
In terms of story FFXII reminds me of the other two Matsuno games I have played - FF Tactics and Tactics Ogre. FFXII has quite a bit of similarity with Tactics as well. Often times there is a lot packed in the dialogue so there may not be a lot but it has meaning. I can understand if some people don't like that style.
