Do you like the visual style in Fincher's films? I love it. I'm currently reading Chuck Palahniuk's Survivor (they didn't have Fight Club), and if there's one guy who can capture the atmosphere of that novel in a film...
Sometimes. I try not to read too closely into a film's pedigree before watching it, but as you know, sometimes it is so overwhelming.
As you should. Don't you feel annoyed when you feel like you like a film or give it another chance because some authority (a friend who likes it, an important critic, filmsite top 250 etc.) likes it?
Walter is where I turn before all of my life's major choices.
Haha, it's called 'City of God' over here as well. Or at least on the DVD. I saw The Big Lebowski for the second time, without lack of sleep and wíth a good couch to sit in this time. I liked it better than the first time. Walter is definitely the star in every scene he's in. "you want a toe? I can get you a toe. There are ways, you don't wanna know. ... I can probably get you a toe by 3 o' clock. With nail polish and everything."
Crazy Belgians. Anyway, I have seen "Cidade de Deus", known to lazy Americans as City of God. Terrific film, possibly top twenty of the decade.
BTW, have you seen Cidade de Deus?
I haven't seen the original yet. Infernal Affairs, right? (No spoilers, please.) And I haven't seen Raging Bull, Goodfellas or Casino yet, but The Departed is definitely better than Taxi Driver.
The Departed is the most overrated Scorsese film. The original was far superior and didn't have the lazy ending.
Haha. Yes, I did. Why?
Wait a minute, did you really just say that The Departed is better than Taxi Driver? I don't think we can speak anymore.
The thing about Donnie Darko is, you don't know if it never happened or if it did. I like that. But I'll give that film a rest. Yeah, it must be intentional. Taxi Driver is nothing compared to The Departed either. A friend of mine told me that The Wind that Shakes is great too, so that makes three intelligent people. I hope it doesn't disappoint me because of my high expectations. Expectations are always bad. Did you like The Big Lebowski the first time?
Heather is correct on The Wind That Shakes the Barley and Moon, as well, even if she is wrong about Donnie Darko.
I think Donnie Darko is a noble failure. Great cast, interesting twists, but the entire "this never happened" copout ending ruined it. I remember reading some time ago that the different dialogue in Pulp Fiction may be Tarantino's way of showing different perspectives. This wasn't from any commentary or anything, just someone's theory. It does seem weird to have such a glaring mistake, however. Taxi Driver would fall under my own "films you think you are supposed to like" category. I like it, but I think it is minor Scorsese compared to say Raging Bull or Goodfellas.
It was fake. And yeah, those actors are very good and quite popular in Belgium. I get what you're saying. I think I like Pulp Fiction more now than I did the first time. Also, I hate it when I think I like a film because I'm supposed to, you know? Have you seen Donnie Darko? And have you ever noticed that the yelling woman in the beginning of Pulp Fiction doesn't yell the same thing at the end of the film? In the beginning, it's just one take of her yelling something like "Any of you ****ing pricks move, and I'll execute every mother****ing last one of ya!", whereas in the end, that take is combined with another take, shot from the side and she yells something different in the second part of her sentence. So it's something like "Any of you ****ing pricks move, and I'll execute every of you mother****ers!". I hate it when great films have flaws like that. (Although I read that that 'flaw' was intended, to imply that the scene at the end is shown through Jules' eyes.) Do you like Taxi Driver?
