Dude! I MET JOHN PAUL JONES! He was in town for the Them Crooked Vultures concert (last night). I was just walking along the waterfront, next to the arena where the concert was going to start in a few hours. I look up, and John Paul ****ing Jones is walking towards me. I stare at him, and he notices. I say: "John Paul Jones?!" He nods, smiles, and extends a hand. I take it, fumble out a "Hi!", and he carries on his way. It all happened so fast, and I didn't get a photo or an autograph, but I met a ****ing member of Led Zeppelin! BTW, best concert of my life.
Cool. I don't read your journal though. I don't read anyone's really.
At the music festival I went to just over a week ago. Details in my journal, which I consider a blog. I got their autographs. I'll take a photo of me holding it and put it in my journal/blog. I'm starting an autograph book, see.
Yeah, accents are less prominent in singing. When did you talk to Kasabian? I stood next to dEUS' singer at a bar after a concert once. Should have run home and get all my CDs and LPs to get them signed, since I live not much more than a kilometer away from that place. I couldn't think of anything to ask him though, since I already knew when the new album would arrive. Plus he was being hit on by two chicks, and it didn't seem right to interrupt.
Hahaha Homme can really paint a picture in your mind of the horrible things he can do to you 0.o It's interesting how (to a large extent) accents disappear when people sing. After speaking to Kasabian I was amazed just how English they sounded. Their accents are really thick, but Meighan sounds so ordinary when singing.
P.S. I've got nothing against children's music. I love the Flemish and Dutch folk songs (I am a cantus man ). But seeing a rock band (or electro or pretty much any other modern genre band) singing in Dutch is weird most of the time. We can't help it. P.P.S. I could have just said 'Because English is the lanugage of rock', and it would have been equally true. And a lot shorter. P.P.P.S. I had already seen that video. It's still funny though. There's a video that compiles all videos in which Homme is a little pissed (rightfully though). It's called 'Josh Homme is awesome'.
The reason they sing in English. Pfooh. Singing in Dutch is not normal in Belgium (or the Netherlands) for a rock band. The Belgian and Dutch folk music never evolved into new cool genres like rock'n'roll (like it tends to do in other countries) or even pop, so pretty much all rock bands nowadays sing in English. Why would you sing in a language that only about 22 million speak, you know? When there's a language you speak pretty well, and is THE language of rock'n'roll? Almost all the songs that are written in Dutch are either really lame or for children. Or schlagers for old people (or drunk people). Although there are a few pop/rock bands that sing in Dutch, and are considered pretty good bands (I can think of three right now). English is the language of music in most Northern European countries. Obviously, it's because of Britain's (and the US') authority on all things rock/pop since like the late 1950s. It's an interesting subject though. Me and a friend sometimes talk about how Britain's political power resulted in British rock becoming pop, instead of Eastern European music becoming pop, you know. Singing in English is not really a conscious choice though, it's more of a natural thing... So yeah, it's only logical, you know? The English sung music has had the greatest impact in the last century.
Don't EVER throw anything at Josh Homme!
Is there a reason they sing in English? Do they ever preform in Flemish?
Also, I have an album with just Tom Barman (dEUS singer) and Guy Van Nueten (Belgian pianist) performing dEUS songs and some covers live. It's really great to hear stuff from The Ideal Crash with just a voice, a piano and occasionally a clean guitar.
I should have another listen, because I can't seem to remember one line from The Magic Hour. I love Put the Freaks Up Front, One Advice Space and obviously Instant Street a lot. I really like this part of Everybody's Weird: I was flashing on a thought On a party in this town If I said what's on my mind There'd be not a soul around
Too easy: YouTube - Pet Shop Boys - West End Girls (2003 Digital Remaster) Yeah, it's real chill, the lyrics flow well, and I feel I can relate to them. (Talking about The Magic Hour here).
The Magic Hour? Really? I never responded to that song for some reason. I'll check out Foud du Fafa right away. Do you know what song hey are parodying with Inner City Pressure? It's obviously New Wave, but it sounds so bloody familiar.
Sister Dew is easily my favourite song on that album. That and The Magic Hour. The whole album is really good though. I'd say that there isn't one average song, and certainly no bad ones. Bret you got it going on is the best of FOTC. Have you heard Foux du Fafa and Inner City Pressure? Man, they are just unnaturally too funny.
Also, I discovered so many other great Flight of the Conchords songs. If you're into it and Bret, you got it going on. Awe-some.
