Well, it's like this: you can freely move around the world like any other RPG's in a three-dimensional environment. However, you have to touch an enemy to initiate battle with it. When in battle, you can have up to three people in your party, and you control one of them; the other two are controlled by the AI. You can attack with the O and X buttons. It's also real-time, so there's no waiting. You can also move around the entire field.
I've never even played any of the Tales series! Meh, I'll have to check it out.
Oh! Star Ocean 3? Well, there's a lot to explain about it, really. Have you played any other the Tales series games? i.e. Tales of Phantasia, Tales of Legendia, Tales of Symphonia, Tales of the Abyss, etc. And as for my favorite form, I like the looks of Wisdom Form the best, but Final Form is the most useful.
