Actually I did make it my avatar right after writing that VM. I think strange-coloured animals are awesome. Know what's cool about that kiwi? ....It's not an albino. It just has a really rare, recessive gene. Obviously its not much of an advantage in the wild -- but pre-human settlement and post-separation from Australia (anywhere between 85 million years ago to 900 years ago), kiwis had few natural predators (and certainly no mammals). I think they're gonna breed it with another kiwi that carries the recessive gene (but I'm pretty sure that is's the only kiwi alive that exhibits the trait). I have seen an albino kiwi though. It was also blind, but that didn't seem to bother it, given they forage for insects by smell, and their nostrils are on the end of their beak (so, already close to the ground). And yes I have seen a few kea. We had a pair follow us up a mountain for a few hours once. They're so loud (they just squawk 'kea' over and over). I really like them too. I think one of the world's only mountain parrots. They live up in the tundra, and they're green on the outside, so you can't see them on the ground, but when they fly around you, you see all the red on the underside of their wings. They're really beautiful. They're a bit of a nuisance to people going skiing though. They act like this on a daily basis, for real:

Hedgehogs ARE pretty cool. Especially when they have albinism.
