I think I meant a patent on a specific gene within a cultivar. I thought you were making some dig at my referencing haha.
Btw, you'll forgive my little joke. You contradicted yourself in your reference of Biopiracy in which you stated it was impossible to take a patent out on a plant but only in the featured gene and then stated that patents also existed in cultivars, which are infact plants. I was confused, so I thought perhaps you got this information from a Wikipedia article. I was tired, misunderstood and it seemed funny.
I hate it when that happens to a post and it only ever seems to happen to huge posts you've spent a great amount of time on.
I think my intentions were a bit clearer in the original I wrote. When it was deleted, I couldn't be bothered being terribly clear, just getting something across relatively quickly.
I just didn't understand where you were bringing the discussion. It seemed like you were giving precedence for GMs from HYVs, so that's what I assumed. Both will have serious problems with sustainability, I assure you. Someday, I see the effects of the green revolution to be felt in those countries the same way the Potato famine was felt in Ireland. Dependence begets these things. Hopefully, the effects of the green revolution will not be felt in the venture of GMs. It's not that I don't believe in the technology. I don't believe the people using it, care about it enough to secure it fully.
Yeah sorry, I did go on about HYVs a little too much; but that's where my knowledge lies in this area, and why I got you to make this thread so I could bring my knowledge more into the 21st century. However, I'd still be willing to argue that many of the features of HYVs persist in GMOs, as well as many of the attitudes and 'philosophies' surrounding agriculture and global agribusiness. EDIT: You want me to donate to Wikipedia?
It's kind of a crusade subject for my career, so I still had it fresh in mind except one or two facts. But beware, I did write it early in the morning on zero sleep. So it may have some gaping holes in it's logic. Enjoy.
Haha wow that was fast. I'll post in a few days perhaps. Time to school up on it again.
Compared to Haiti's population per square mile added with the poverty level...it certainly does demonstrate magnitude versus vulnerability. But it is gratifying, after Haiti's misfortune, to see NZ come out okay. I personally have never experienced an earthquake (despite living almost literally on top of the New Madrid Fault), but with all the recent 7+ quakes, I can't imagine I'll be left out too much longer...
I really have no idea how not a single person died in the quake. I mean, check these out. It helped that it struck at 4.30am, though. Also, some suburbs of the city are unscathed, and other suburbs are having whole streets cleared. Comes down to soil type, apparently. Liquefaction of the sandy soil causing subsidence of large areas, and even burying whole cars in silt springing forth from the earth. Some weird pictures. Oh, and personally, I slept through it. It was felt in my city, at about 4.5 I think. But the epicentre would be about an hour's flight away. To put the size in perspective, Haiti was 7.0. Given that everyone's okay, that 90% of people are insured, that the government is investigating ways to help the other 10%, and that we turned down US military and UN support, it really goes to show inequality between the countries. They say impact is more than a function of the event, but also vulnerability. We aren't vulnerable, thankfully.
Heard about the quake, man. Hope it didn't inconvenience. Hell of a thing, 7.1 and no one died.
Lol, you may have come across a picture of the character before and not realized/remembered it.
The ****? In that case, there is no way I have a basis to find it 'familiar', but I maintain that I do...
Oh, It's from this Japanese adult cartoon, called Super Milk-Chan. The character's name is Dr. Eyepatch.
Hey Sin, where/what is your avatar from? It feels familiar, and I'm sure I should know the answer, but for the life of me I can't remember. That's damn frustrating.
