  1. What your describing in conservatives also happens in liberals. It's called being an "ideologue" - strictly following a mantra of a particular philosophy. You've probably noticed that I like free speech, but that I also have reservations about it ("nigger", "objectifying women", etc.). I think that is what having an open mind is. Just because you agree with something doesn't mean you have to agree with it fully, as (too) many do. At the same time, one can have an open mind, and by coincidence, appear as an ideologue, so it's never clear cut in itself.

I think that advertising can be a particular type of art. We don't like it now, but wait a few hundred years, just like with the chalices. Art is created for all kinds of purpose, even the purpose of non-purpose, but art all depends on someone seeing it as art. I think that it is a person's skill or proficiency which creates art. Like how a child's drawing isn't art deemed worthy enough of any accolades outside of a mother's.
  2. I'll question when I feel like it.

Sometimes I think 'what if I'm wrong?'. What if being conservative and not open-minded is the right way to go?
Then I realise, the fact that I'm doubting myself, makes me right. How can conservatives live in this society when they're not even willing to evaluate their own ideologies etc. Or at least a big part of them.

    Can advertising be art. Hmmm.

I'd have to say no, but it depends on the context. If it is used for arty purposes, definitely. But just a commercial shown on tv, nah, that's not art. I think art is only art when it's meant to be art.

Like when we look at medieval drinking cups with gems in them and put them in museums and say how beautiful it is. But it's not art. They were just fancy drinking cups in their time...

And 'beauty' is both extremely subjective and diverse. Social/political impact is often what makes photographs 'art'. Ugliness can be beauty too. Just like silence can be a great soundtrack.
  3. So because it's been thought out, we shouldn't question it? Yes, it's unlikely to change, but we should always question.

So can advertising ever be art then?
  4. And by art being beautiful for whatever reason I didn't mean whatever the motivation behind it is.

In this culture, everything is mostly subjective. What is art to one authority in the field, may be crap to another.
  5. Too ready?

I don't think so. Most of those things have been thought through by a lot of smart people before us. so...
  6. Yeah it's always fun to question fundamental things. Like in Economics (introduction paper, I'm just taking it to make up points, really), when we were looking at the Basic Competitive Model. This includes rational behaviour, and that sort of thing. And the lecturer just described it, but I kept questioning it - testing if it was valid, for my own interest you know.

I think, if anything, we are too ready to accept simple arguments. But then again, it's easy to look to deep and miss what is right in front of ya face
  7. We are the only members online. -_-
  8. A friend and fellow student of mine has no trouble whatsoever to reach word count. If anything, he goes over it. Whereas I look at my word count at the end of my clonclusion and go: Aww, man...

Poetry = text written in verses.

Man those are the questions you see in the first class of General Literary Science. I like thinking about those things. But most of the time, it's so much simpler than you think.
  9. That's very good. But bad if you are struggling to reach a word count, say in an essay. Though I always go over. Different sides of the same coin?

And no, I don't speak Dutch, so go ahead and share them, but they may as well not have any significance.

    What is poetry?
  10. I'm not sure if that's good or bad, but I'm quite happy about the way I write.

I could share some of my poems with you, but they're in Dutch so...
And poems are in no way relevant to what you were talking about.
  11. I was just going to give you rep for your latest post in the "n i g g a" thread... but I can't. Anyhoo, the reason was going to be that you have a weird ability to be freaking concise. You must write mean summaries. I can't summarise for shit. Period. I just never got my head around it. You posts are really reader-friendly, because you say lots (read: more than me), but say it in a tenth of the words.
  12. Yeah.
I was being convenient. And general.

I should've never brought it up.

Anyway, that definition for literature wasn't even mine. I'll see if I can find from who it is. But I love it. They asked the guy what literature is. And he replied just that. Awesome.
  13. Uhm..

"Art is that which is, for whatever reason, beautiful."
  14. I didn't say everything that is beautiful is art.
  15. No, I mean that something can be beautiful (and thus, 'art') as well as commercial. I mean, why not?
