There are nine. However, only eight can be in your party. One of the members get replaced later on in the game. But if you're on your second playthrough, you can choose to keep him.

All the characters are automatically acquired through the storyline, and they all are useful. You can beat the game using any four, really. Pick the ones that you like best.
