You HAVE to successfully do the Pummel Blitz on Vargas once Sabin shows up. To do that go down to the Blitz command and enter '<-, ->, <-' and then press A. You have to be fairly quick, but it is a simple Blitz to do and once you pull it off the battle ends. You have barely begun the awesome that is FFVI.
