It Begins: Dota 2

So one thing I learned about from my friends while at PAX was the existence of Dota 2. Yes, I know about League of Legends. I have a friend who plays it, he's somewhat well known. I mean, his face is on 2 different Razor boxes. But anyway.

Both K and E play Dota 2. And after his failed attempt to get me into those Toho games, E suggested it and showed me a replay of theirs. Pretty interesting. I played WCIII back in the day. So I expressed interest and one of them sent be the beta invite. Spent several hours over the course of two days watching live games to kind of see what goes on and such. Sadface, you have to pay to watch tournaments.

Last night I played my first match against bots, which was pretty much a disaster. Everyone was new obviously, no communication except for one guy who apparently is an expert with two wins to his name, but he disconnected when he realized we couldn't win, leaving us to get mauled by the bots. Not a very auspicious beginning, I have to say.

So I watched a few more games and read up on some guides and tried again, this time against human players. Well, it was still a mess with player issues on both sides, but we actually won our game. Yay that. And now I've done a little more research, picked out a skill/item progression tree for my current character (Jakiro, if anyone cares) and maybe after work I'll give it another go. Slippery slope, I am on you!

Anyone here play and care to give tips to a hapless newbie?

    Not sure what time zones are like, but I just hopped into bed and its 11:30. I am on 2 weeks leave as of tomorrow so I can stay up later and we can play some practice matches against bots while I explain some stufd

    Well I'm on EST and I work mostly night shifts so generally if I play it's only going to be one or two matches after I get home at 10ish. I have a couple other friends who play and they're helping me out a bit too. I've already watched a bunch of games too to try and get a handle on how things work. I'm still pretty slow but according to the friend I played with last night I didn't do too badly, at least. We still lost, but not entirely due to me at least haha.

    dota 2 has been out for quite some time. Just need an invite and if you go to Reddit it's pretty simple to get one. I used to prefer HoN over dota 2 because of the speed differences but I know more dota heroes and builds and items more then I do on HoN or League.

    I actually have an invite and played a few games already, thanks though. I'm working on a build for Jakiro right now actually. Using elements from the default build, a few guides I read and the games I've been watching, plus whatever I think works best for my style. I plan on using Jakiro as sort of my experimental character, learning to play using him in a support role while I figure things out.
